Geeky Distractions – July 20 2006
I finished the single-player portion of LOTR BFMEII yesterday and I have to give this game more credit than my initial impressions would seem to indicate. It’s no easy task for a development house, even one as grand as EA, to come up with a natural and effective control scheme for an RTS based on a console. After all, it’s a freaking console. The very notion of point-and-click is so deeply intertwined with the keyboard and mouse that you would think any control scheme using a console controller would be a disaster. Luckilly, this is not the case with this game, and despite a longer “getting used to” curve than most game control schemes, it accomplishes the lofty expectation of being useful to micro-managing your RTS armies, resources and buildings. All that said, it’s still completely inferior to the PC point and click interface. I have no doubt in my mind that two players of equal skill, one using a PC, the other a 360 would very quickly come to the realization that the PC point-and-click interface is still the ultimate RTS control scheme.
